Essentials
“And now here is my secret, a very simple secret: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.”
― Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, The Little Prince
Essential workers. During the many forms of quarantine throughout the nation we have seen that “essential” has meant different things, to different people. “Invisible to the eye” is what our quote defines as essential.
What would you consider essential in your life? I suppose it depends upon our financial situation often. I can go to the store when flush with cash and think Breyer’s Rocky Road ice cream is a must each time I walk through the door. But put me into a cash squeeze and a bag of potatoes will suddenly be the only thing I buy twice in one visit.
Can we boil down the true essentials though? Have we ever pressed ourselves into that kind of exercise- finding out the things that I simply cannot do without?
We have physical essentials, and we have dietary essentials. There are essentials which cost us nothing and yet others bleed us of our resources.
Now, spiritual essentials. Are all spiritual essentials invisible to the eye? It would seem so. And yet, I consider your presence or a group of other like minded people to be essential. I cannot live a spiritual life in isolation. Especially a Christian spiritual life- that is something that is dependent upon community. One cannot be a Christian and not belong to any group of other Christians. Now of course someone isolated physically is a different story. But we are called to share and be accountable to one another as Christians.
And God… God finds you essential. God’s work is done through you, and others, and me. So as you find for yourself the things you may find essential in a spiritual life, other than being a part of a community, I’d love to hear from you what you consider as essential in your spiritual life.
Essentially
Yours,
Rev. Ken
