The Light

The Light

While you have the light, believe in the light, so that you may become children of light.”- John 12:36

Jesus spoke these words shortly before he was to be betrayed, handed over to the Romans, and then hung on the cross, to die.

Jesus was speaking of himself. Jesus called himself “the light”. To hear him say these words I perceive a faint pleading. Jesus pled with his disciples to stop wasting time, the time that they had in his presence. Jesus had also said, “Walk while you have the light, so that the darkness may not overtake you.” This is a terribly important part of the Jesus story- that we should take advantage of his light, because his leading will never lead to the darkness.

Darkness can sometimes be tempting. Doubt, fear, spiritual fatigue, those all can set into our mindset and out heart. Once we have given in to the darkness, it can be difficult to pull away. So that’s why Jesus pled for his disciples to take advantage of his physical presence, he knew he would soon be bodily taken from them. If they could rest their spirits upon the assurance of light and hope that he taught, the darkness would never have a chance.

So in these days of Holy Week, before the day when Jesus’ ministry was extinguished, take advantage of his offer of light. The health crisis which the Corona virus has cast upon us provides many opportunities for darkness to pervade our being.

Look to Jesus. Go ahead, be desperate; go ahead, be vulnerable to him; go ahead, don’t worry how others might look at you; go ahead, wrap your whole self around the promise that Jesus’ light has cast. Let it wash over you, let it warm you like the Spring rays of the Sun.

May warmth be all over you and may you warm others with the light afforded you.

Blessings. Rev. Ken
