Alongside

“It is not about our world collapsing. Rather, it’s about another human being holding our hand in the collapse. For then the carnage is no longer about the loss, but about what both of these hands are going to build from it.”
―
Craig D. Lounsbrough

In these days of Covid-19 the world is NOT collapsing. However, the world is already changed to something new, and many may fear this newness and even attempt to return to what “was” before the pandemic. We in the church must resist the urge to return to what was.

You see, everyone has moved on, including ourselves. Dependence upon the internet has become greater across generations and across denominations. Families have remembered to play with one another. Baking has become a staple in the weekly cooking fair. Being at home on Sunday morning every week is normal for the time being. Many don’t have the hassle of fighting traffic every morning and night. The list goes on and on and we expect things now that we can’t even articulate but will count on them once daily life returns to pre-quarantine routines.

How can we take advantage of these changes both seen and unseen?

In what ways are we standing alongside each other, hand in hand, that we can cooperate to build the new needs of the new world?

Please, be creative. Please, dream big. Please, be a leader in the new world.

I have suggested to the Church Council that we consider making the church building a wedding venue- capable of holding both the Service and the Reception. The weddings would be smaller in size, indeed. Yet, adapting to the new world in ways like this is one of the ways we could begin to adjust while still offering the fine week-to-week worship we enjoy today.

Blessings on your brainstorming. In your pondering, may you find fun and godly play.

Rev. Ken
